STARCHES

In the food industry, corn starch is used primarily as a thickening agent or binder. It is also sold to food packers for use by consumers.

In the industrial sector, starches are used as strengthening and finishing agents in paper production, and in the production of adhesives for shipping containers, display boards and other corrugated products. The textile industry uses starch to reduce friction in the weaving process and improve the feel and appearance of fabric.

Unmodified starch is used in the brewing industry and as a thickener for cooking. In the industrial sector, it is found in paper and corrugating. It is prized for its finishing, binding and adhesive qualities.

Modified starch remains stable at many temperatures, allowing foods to be frozen and then thawed without losing consistency and taste. This makes modified starches ideal for frozen and instant foods, along with salad dressings, canned soups, pie fillings and other processed foods.

In the industrial area, modified starches are used in paper, plastics, adhesives and construction materials, as well as in mining, oil and gas drilling, water filtration, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Cationic starches, which Corn Products International brought to market, allow paper manufacturers to use recycled fibers more effectively. They also increase machine speeds and improve wet strength. Carrier starches allow corrugators to bond difficult papers together and increase machine speed.

SWEETENERS

Dextrose. Corn Products International manufactures three types of dextrose: monohydrate, anhydrous and specialty.

Monohydrate dextrose is used by a variety of food manufacturers, particularly the confectionery, baking and brewing sectors.

Anhydrous dextrose’s primary use is for intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical applications. It is also found in some specialty food applications.

Specialty dextrose is used in applications ranging from confectioneries and low-calorie sweeteners to spice mixes and beverage powders.

Other dextrose applications include industrial uses such as wall board, and as a base for fermentation products in vitamins, organic acids, amino acids and alcohols.

High fructose corn syrup is used for soft drinks and fruit-flavored beverages. It is also used in heat-raised breads, rolls, doughs, chocolate milk, yogurt, ice creams and cakes.

High maltose corn syrup is used as a source of sugars in brewing beer, as well as in the production of confections and other processed foods.

Glucose corn syrup is used as a base in industrial and food products, including baked goods, beverages, snack foods, canned fruits, condiments, candy, dairy products, preserves, prepared mixes and syrups.

Maltodextrin is used in dry food products such as coffee whiteners and flavor ingredients.

Corn syrup solids remain clear in solutions and are great bulking agents.
